Ceramic materials such as lithium hydride can be rapidly solidifed into ribbons or spheres having fine-grained microstructures. Gas atomized powders may solidify into three different spherical morphologies. Melt spun LiH solidifies into ribbons composed of columnar grains. Gas atomized spheres have finer grains than melt spun ribbons. Ground melt spun ribbons have less closed porosity and pack to higher densities than do gas atomized spheres. Figs.
