Based on degenerative transfer-mediated radical polymerization, controlled blockcopolymers of styrene and butyl acrylate have been successfully prepared by addition of styrene to poly butyl acrylate precursor and vice-versus. By using 1-phenylethyl iodide as a transfer agent and AIBN as an initiator, poly(butyl acrylate-b-styrene) block copolymers can be obtained by addition of styrene at the completion of the butyl acrylate polymerization. However, synthesis of block copolymer of poly(styrene-b-butyl acrylate) required additional AIBN along with butyl acrylate at the end of the styrene polymerization. In addition, controlled random copolymers of styrene and butyl acrylate have been obtained by using the same technique. (AN).
