摘要

Supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) is one of the promising alternative chem demil technologies. It is attractive because of its ability to rapidly and efficiently decontaminate diverse organic and inorganic wastes, including aqueous wastes, in a self-contained process with very clean by-product streams. Several process designs are being developed, applications to various industrial, municipal, and military wastes are under consideration, and commercialization has occurred for treatment of aqueous wastes from a chemical plant in Austin, Texas. However, technical obstacles could exclude SCWO from broad-based chem demil applications. Major challenges are how to achieve and sustain at acceptable cost, high agent destruction efficiencies, without adverse by-products, and how to avoid corrosion and equipment fouling owing to acids and salt particles formed from halogens and other heteroatoms in the agent.
