An important class of propellant, explosive, and pyrotechnic (PEP) material that requires disposal permits is the chlorine-containing perchlorate explosives and propellants. Characterization of the recovery of HCl and Cl2 is necessary to the development of emission factors for these materials. While characterization of emissions for many energetic materials (EMs) has proven feasible, chlorine-containing PEP materials pose a special challenge. Methods to account for chlorine emissions in PEP materials from open burning (OB) have eluded scientists except in small-scale bench tests.
