Bioventing Performance and Cost Results From Multiple Air Force Test Sites,Technology Demonstration

This technical memorandum summarizes the results of bioventing treatability testsconducted at multiple Air Force sites. In April 1992, the Air Force Center For Environmental Excellence (AFCEE), in cooperation with the Air Force Armstrong Laboratory and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), began a major initiative to demonstrate the feasibility of using the bioventing technology on over 145 Air Force sites nationwide. Four key objectives were established for this initiative: (1) To document the ability of bioventing technologies to remediate petroleum contaminated soils in a variety of climatic, soil, and contaminant conditions; (2) To use this significant data set to complete a bioventing principles and practices manual for use by the Air Force, the Department of Defense (DoD), EPA, and other interested agencies; (3) To promote regulatory and public acceptance of this technology; and (4) To begin the process of effectively remediating 145 fuel contaminated sites at minimum cost to the taxpayer.
