The Technical Architecture Framework for Information Management (TAFIM)characterizes an information system as composed of data, mission-specific applications, and a technical infrastructure consisting of support applications, application platforms, and communications networks. This document presents technical architecture concepts and design guidance for information systems in the Department of Defense (DoD). As part of the TAFIM, this volume provides guidance for the evolution of the DoD's technical infrastructure in support of specific mission requirements. The data and mission-specific software architectures are critical elements in information system development. Guidance on their development and use will be provided in separate documents outside of the TAFIM. This volume provides concepts and design guidance that will help architects, integrators, and system designers to develop information systems technical architectures. These concepts and guidance should be considered in the context of the Technical Reference Model presented in Volume 2. The contents of this volume contrast with the TAFIM Volume 2, which describes services and interfaces between entities. This volume addresses components and the allocation of services to the components.
