摘要

This report is a sequel to the TNO-TM study 'Visual surveillance of the targetarea of the Artillery Training Centre ASK in Oldebroek, The Netherlands' (Varkevisser, 1966), in which it was theoretically shown how terrain surveillance can be effectively supported with video cameras. The purpose of the present project was to demonstrate for military personnel the possibilities and limitations of several visual aids for the surveillance task. A black and white CCD camera, a colour CCD camera and a pair of 6x42 binoculars were compared. The demonstration took place on 14 and 15 December 1995, at the proposed location II (Varkevisser, 1996) in the target area of ASK. First, the visual acuity of the observers, with and without the various visual aids, was determined with a large test board in the field. No significant differences in observer performance between the three visual aids were found. Next, the observers were asked to search for, detect and identify various target vehicles and personnel, with and without the various visual aids. The targets were randomly placed at various positions and ranges in the field. Lastly, the subjective opinion of the observers on the usability of the various systems was asked. Although it was only a demonstration of effectively one day, we succeeded in gathering detection and recognition scores for 12 different conditions. No significant differences in observer performance between all visual aids were found. The subjective scores showed a preference for the colour camera and the binoculars over the S/W camera and unaided eye.
