Long Term Scientific Study/44 (LTSS/44): Environmental Technologies forApplication to NATO Military Assets and Bases. Volume 1: Main Report. Panel 1 on Long-Term Scientific Studies

LTSS/44 studied 10 contaminant areas of interest to NATO's efforts to stopenvironmental pollution at the source. The study areas included: (1) Petroleum, Oils, and Lubricants; (2) Munitions; (3) Fire Suppressants; (4) Refrigerants (Ozone Depleting Substances-ODS); (5) Solvents and Cleaners (Volatile Organic Compounds-VOC); (6) Organic and (7) Inorganic Surface Coatings; (8) Liquid Shipboard Wastes; (9) Solid Shipboard Wastes; and (10) Pesticides. Each problem area was described in detail. The current situation, on-going research and recommended directions to accelerate the phase out or elimination of each contaminant (area) by substitution, process change and management improvement was described in detail. Finally, LTSS/44 recommended a way forward for the Defence Research Group to embrace further study of the means to eliminate and prevent contamination while minimizing the impact of compliance with environmental regulations, laws, and international agreements on the NATO military mission.
