The major control strategy for microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC) is theuse of a biocide. This strategy usually requires the addition also of a corrosion inhibitor to mitigate corrosion caused by species, such as chloride, and possibly by the biocide. SRI International developed a strategy to integrate the biocidal and inhibitor functionalities in a single compound. In a previous study, we found that phosphonium-ion-based inhibitors provided excellent corrosion protection in the absence of bacteria. Moreover, phosphonium ions can be synthesized in one simple step with a range of functional groups that could impart biocidal properties to the ions.
