Workshop on Rough Surface Scattering and Related Phenomena. Napa Valley Lodge,Yountville, California, June 23-June 28, 1996

This proposal for 5k is to support conference expenses (ground transportation,lodging and select meals) for participants attending 'Workshop on Rough Surface Scattering and Related Phenomena,' to be held in Napa Valley, California, June 24-27, 1996. It is intended that there be no more than about 25 participants. The topics to be covered in this workshop fall into three categories. The first is the direct scattering problem: given a rough surface, what is the scattered field. The surface in question can bound a homogeneous medium or, more interestingly, an inhomogeneous medium. Reports on new physical phenomena in scattering from such surfaces, as well as methodological advances in calculations of this scattering, will be sought. The second category is the inverse scattering problem: given some kind of (specified) scattering data, can one reconstruct the surface from which the scattering occurred, or can one extract information about the statistical properties of the surface (e.g. the power spectrum of a randomly rough surface). Again, reports on methodological advances will be sought. The third topic is near-field optical microscopy, with an emphasis on the possibilities of resolving surface structures, topographical and/or optical, with dimensions much smaller than the wavelength of the incident light.
