Central Asia: A New Great Game.

摘要

The author examines struggle for influence in the region by Russia, Iran,Pakistan, India, and China. Serious political, economic, ethnic, religious, and social challenges confront the region, which seem to present opportunities for these states; but, the risks that increased instability would ricochet back on them are too great. Thus in its own way, each has promoted regional stability while seeking to expand its influence through economic means. Since the United States has no vital interests in the area, Washington's primary focus will be to prevent existing problems from escalating into crises that might engage Central Asia's more powerful neighbors. The author concludes with policy recommendations toward that end.
