Blood Amplification: Use of Phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) Treated Red Blood CellTransfusions in the Dog (Canis familiaris)

Theoretically, decreasing hemoglobin oxygen affinity (HOA) of red blood cells(RBC) prior to transfusion should augment oxygen consumption during anemic hypoxia. Incubation of RBCs with phospenolpyruvate (PEP) increases 2,3-DPG and decreases HOA. This study evaluated the effect of transfusion with PEP treated RBCs on cardiovascular compensation and oxygen consumption in acutely anemic dogs.
