Exposure of soidiers and military personnel to biological agents can devastate the health, safety, and function of the military. This can result from battlefield warfare or fallout, over or covert acts, or naturally causes. To avert or control outbreaks of disease, rapid and reliable detection of suspect biological agents is needed. Rapid diagnosis of infectious biological agents is paramount to the health and safety of the military to effectively control outbreaks of disease. While classic microbiological methods, such as those involving the cultivation of biological agents, can accurately dent infectious agents. the protocols are nine consuming and cumbersome. As a result, a military unit can be devastated and an outbreak out of control before a suspected infectious agent is identified. Accordingly, technology for rapid, within hours, is secure the function of the military. Antibody-based detection methodology developed in recent years offers an attractive means for rapid, reliable detection of infectious agents. Antibodies designed to recognize and tag target biological agents can provide rapid and easy detection. However, this technology requires further development to meet the logistical requirements of the military. Primarily, clinical samples must be prepared to ensure that infectious agents are effectively detection by an artibody-based system. This can be accomplished using immuno-magnetic separation (IMS). This involves recovering the microorganisms from a given clinical specimen, removing substances which may interfere with the antibody detection system, and concentrating the recovered microorganisms to promote detection sensitivity. MS has been successfully employee for a variety of applications. In addition, adaptation of the detection methodology as an automated or semiautomated system would be very valuable as a safeguard to protect personnel from potentially dangerous organisms.
