This report describes work that has been successfully completed by the F&S team during the first year of the DARPA/Air Force sponsored program, Optical Fiber-Based ND System for Aging Aircraft Structures contract number, F33615-95-2-5240. The purpose of this report is to provide both an overview of the current state of the strain and corrosion detection and quantification systems and future directions for continued development, testing and commercialization. The F&S team has worked together for the past five years developing fiber optic sensor technology for aircraft instrumentation. This experience has allowed the team to leverage this one-year program to produce prototype strain and corrosion detection devices currently undergoing testing at Boeing and F&S corrosion test cell facilities. The team is also prepared to begin initial aircraft instrumentation for in-flight testing the prototype systems.
