Construction of the Friability Test at TNO-PML

In co-operation with SNPE, France, the friability test has been constructed. Thistest is applied to determine the effect of impact on an explosive substance which is a candidate to be assigned as an Extremely Insensitive Detonating Substance (EIDS). In this test a sample is directed against a steel plate at a velocity of about 150 m/s by using a gas gun. After having performed this test, the explosive is tested in the closed vessel test to assess any changes in the burning characteristic, i.e. the peak pressure and pressure rise rate, due to the impact.
