Russia's War in Chechnya: Testing Democracy in the Crucible of War

摘要

This thesis will argue the war in Chechnya occurred due to democratic structuralweaknesses and that the cessation of hostilities in Chechnya is the result of maturing democratic norms. If this proposition is correct then this thesis would add a potential corollary to the Democratic Peace Theory which is that transitional democracies may still fight each other but will eventually seek a peaceful settlement due to emerging internal constraints.
