Aquatic Plant Control Research Program: Classical Pathogen Biocontrol Research inAsia 1994-1995: Surveys for Pathogen Agents of Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle and Myriophyllum spicatum L

Twenty-five sites were visited in China in 1994 and 1995 as part of a jointeffort to survey for insects and pathogens as potential biological control agents of hydrilla and Eurasian watermilfoil. During the limited survey time, over 200 fungal isolates were obtained from plant tissues and water samples. Axenic cultures of the fungi were sent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Not all of the isolates are considered to be potential agents for biological control. Of particular interest are pathogens in the genera Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Cylindrocladium, Glomerella, and Mycoleptodiscus. One or more species in each of these genera have been reported to be disease-producing organisms on a variety of plants.
