Operation Urgent Fury, Grenada. The planning and Execution of Joint Operations inGrenada

Written several years after the end of Operation URGENT FURY, this study focusesspecifically on the involvement of the Chairman, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Joint Staff in planning and directing operations in Grenada in 1983. The monograph begins with a discussion of contingency planning for noncombatant evacuation which started after the 12 October 1983 coup that removed Grenada's Marxist leader, Maurice Bishop, and ends with the conclusion of the combat phase of URGENT FURY on 2 November 1983. The author, Dr. Ronald H. Cole, relied primarily on Joint Staff files and interviews as sources of information. In writing this account, Dr. Cole was given valuable help by a number of the key participants and members of the Joint Staff; their contributions are cited in the endnotes. The final manuscript was reviewed by Mr. Willard J. Webb and Dr. Walter S. Poole, edited by Ms. Penny Norman and typed by Ms. Helga Echols. The end maps are taken from US Marines in Grenada by LtCol Ronald H. Spector, USMCR, and are used with the permission of the History and Museums Division, Headquarters, US Marine Corps. This study was reviewed for declassification by the appropriate US Government agencies and cleared for release. While the text has been declassified, some of the sources remain classified.
