DTI has advanced autostereoscopic and field sequential color (FSC) illuminationtechnologies for flat panel displays. Using a patented backlight technology, DTI has developed prototype 3D flat panel color display that provides stereoscopic viewing without the need for special glasses or other viewing aids. The effort encompassed the adaptation and advancement of a basic parallax illumination concept into a system that repositions the viewing zones in response to viewer head movement. This technique involves real time variable positioning of the stereo viewing zones and provides wide angle autostereoscopic viewing. Discussions of system architecture, critical component specifications and resultant display characteristics are provided. Also researched was a unique FSC illumination technique involving a combination of colored illumination patterns that are sequentially imaged within the pixels of an LCD. A breadboard model of this illumination system has been built and clearly demonstrates the techniques ability to produce color at reduced frame rates without flicker visibility or color breakup. A description of the concept, breadboarding effort, and data supporting claims are provided.
