摘要

The Jugoslovenska Narodna Armija (JNA) - the Yugoslav National Army, played a pivotal role in the breakup of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY). This thesis is about the Yugoslav military and civil-military relations in the SFRY and the consequences those relations had for Yugoslavia. It chronicles the historical development of the JNA from World War II to the outbreak of hostilities in 1991. The Yugoslav military, as an inherently conservative organization, by seeking to keep SFRY together actually hastened its demise. But this thesis is also about the future of civil-military relations for the former Yugoslav republics. Slovenia, seven years after independence, provides a relevant model of study. I argue that Slovenia is an example of a healthy civil-military relationship. Other South Slav states should consider Slovenia's example when analyzing and adopting their own political structures.
