Verification for the Detection Limit of VX Analysis on New and Future Analytical Mass Spectrometry Systems

The detection limit for VX in the sodium hydroxide neutralization product from the chemical destruction of VX in the Alternate Technology Program was investigated. It was determined that the instrument detection limit for a Finnegan GCQ Ion Trap Detector/Mass Spectrometer allows detection of VX at 20 ppb when using the syringe spike method. This method injects the VX spike at the same time as the chloroform extract from the neutralization matrix but does not directly mix the spike with the chloroform extract. These experiments also result in a recommendation for the type and frequency of preventive maintenance required with this type of sample. Discussions with instrument manufacturers indicate that the ion trap/mass spectrometer technology is likely to be available for the next 10 years.
