This study's focus was to identify perceived orientation and management development needs of department directors and middle managers at a mid-size, not-for-profit community hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina. A major turnover of middle managers that occurred over approximately a year's period brought to senior management's attention the need for orientation and training for department directors, and thus prompted the study. Findings of a mailed self-assessment instrument indicated a valid need shared throughout middle management for developing mechanisms to communicate relevant information across the organization. Using those findings, a Department Director User and Information Manual was developed in both hard copy format, and as an electronic document designed for posting on the organization's proposed intranet. The purpose of the electronic document is to provide a paperless source of ready reference relative to the operations and policies of the organization. In this manner, information considered germane could be readily accessible by all intranet users, and easily updated by an assigned system administrator.
