Role of Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor in Human Breast Cancer

ASIC FIBROBLAST GROWTH FACTOR (BFGF, FGF-2) is a classical mitogen in endothelial cells and an important angiogenesis factor in breast cancer. Although it acts as a transforming factor in fibroblasts, its expression in breast cancer is associated with differentiation and a better prognosis. We introduced bFGF into two breast cancer cell lines at different ends of the dedifferentiation spectrum. Relatively differentiated malignant MCF-7 cells were growth inhibited by bFGF expression and were able to export all isoforms of transfected bFGF but highly dedifferentiated MDA-MB-231 cells were not inhibited and did not export bFGF.
