摘要

Contingency Operations constitute a diverse array of operations ranging from peacekeeping (e.g., Cyprus), to humanitarian aid (Bosnia- Herzegovina before Dayton Accord), to peace making/enforcement (Somalia, Bosnia-Herzegovina after Dayton Accord), to full scale offensive operations (Persian Gulf War). Military operations other than war (MOOTW) such as relief from the effects of natural disasters and terrorism also constitute Contingency Operations. These operations usually involve the cooperation of multinational Forces, and/or other government and non-government organizations. A lack of host nation infrastructures and the uncertain capabilities for interoperability with non-NATO allies pose additional logistical problems. The increasing prevalence of Contingency Operations in NATO presents significant and unique challenges to aircrew health, safety and performance as well as to those responsible for promoting aeromedical Support. Central to these issues is the fact that greater emphasis must be placed on the application of science and technology to enhance aeromedical support. Rapid response times require, not only the efforts of traditional research and development, but, also, real-time initiatives for addressing the novel operational realities of Contingency Operations. Papers were solicited that addressed both traditional and novel technological solutions that meet the needs of aeromedical support in Contingency Operations.
