摘要

Corrosion mitigation of 5xxx series was investigated using two distinct experimental approaches. The first method was applying thermal and mechanical treatments to aluminum alloy (AA) 5083 resulting in improvements in both the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance as measured with the nitric acid metal loss test (NAMLT). The second approach was the deposition of AA5083 and pure zinc coatings to protect the underlying AA5083 substrate. Coatings were characterized qualitatively with scanning electron microscopy and quantitatively with hardness and adhesion testing. Corrosion behavior of coatings was studied using potentiodynamic scans, NAMLT and exposure in a salt-spray chamber.
