This research was an investigation into the development of a methodology for the design and sizing of protective headgear using three-dimensional surface anthropometric data. This introductory chapter has five major parts: background, problem statement, research objective, user needs, and data source. Chapter 2 is a literature review of relevant publications of the design and sizing of protective headgear. Chapter 3 describes the basis for the design and sizing methodology presented in this disseration. Chapter 4 discusses the computer programs developed for the determination of vectors from a midpoint in the head to the surface points. The computer programs are used in the design and sizing methodology. Chapter 5 describes the results of the statistical analysis performed on these vectors of the head for design and sizing of protective headgear. Chapter 6 provides a summary and the conclusions of this research.
