The VDS tow cable has had a history of problems with the elastomer link that ties the fairing components together. Several changes have been made to the cable system and link to compensate but problems still exist. In this study, the results of the chemical, dynamic mechanical and thermal characterization of five polyurethane thermoplastic elastomers are reported. These were proposed as candidate materials to replace the poly(ether)urethane elastomer in use. The results are discussed in terms of the composition, percentage hard and soft segments, degree of phase mixing, and effect of hard segment length on the properties of he five poly(ether)urethane elastomers.
