Prospects Look Good: A View of 10 Ranching and Mining Sites on Nellis Air Force Range, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada

The Nell is Air Force Range, located in south central Nevada, encompasses approximately three million acres of land. Within its borders are numerous historic and prehistoric archaeological resources, many in an excellent state of preservation due to the protection offered by Federal ownership and limited access. Ten of these historic sites, consisting of historic ranching and mining complexes, were selected for recordation and photography, to provide the Air Force with detailed information on current condition, data potential, and conservation and management needs, as well as to provide information on eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. These data are presented herein, together with a discussion of the region's natural and cultural environment and a review of the research goals which directed the investigation. Following this review are the findings of the study, together with an assessment of research potential, determinations of significance, and suggestions for additional work.
