Rift between the Army National Guard and the Active Army

The results of the recent Quadrennial Defense Review and growing competition fordeclining resources have greatly exacerbated the historically uneasy relationship between the Army National Guard and the active Army. This paper explores the historical precedents and reasons for the ongoing tension between the Army components, and highlights the events leading to the current rift. Personal interviews and experiences, an Army War College Class of 1998 Total Force Survey, and published sources provide the basis for recommendations to resolve the dysfunctional relationship between the active Army and the Army National Guard.
