Helmet-Mounted Conjugate Optical Display System: Design Considerations

Conjugate optical display systems (CODSs) have the potential for providing inexpensive, high-resolution imagery suitable for flight simulator applications. As with any display system, however, there are technical issues that have to be addressed before the system can be used effectively. We begin here with a description of the corjugate-optical principle as well as some basic data required to assess the optical properties of a CODS. We then discuss several perceptual issues relevant to the use of a CODS for presenting flight simulator imagery. Finally, we discuss some design considerations in selecting the optical components required to fabricate a CODS.
