The principal focus of the Phase I work was on flexible red emitting display devices. We demonstrated the feasibility of obtaining narrow bandwidth emission from semi-conducting polymer/lanthanide blends on flexible substrates. Spectrally pure, red emitting flexible LEDs have been fabricated. Close to a four-fold increase in device efficiency is obtained when a suitable lanthanide complex is blended with the semi-conducting host polymer. Suitability of the lanthanide complex is determined by the location of the triplet energy level of the ligand relative to the resonance levels of the metal ion. To demonstrate the feasibility of a 3-color display using the polymer blend approach we have also achieved energy transfer from the semi-conducting host polymer to an organic green light-emitting dye, and have fabricated flexible green light-emitting PLEDs.
