Target Detection Using a Linear Sum of Matched Filter Outputs

Mathematical techniques are presented for deriving approximations to the statistical functions that characterize linear sums of matched filter outputs. The approximations are derived using two techniques: (1) Pade approximations to the multi-dimensional characteristic function, and (2) discrete Rayleigh mixtures based on an exact or approximate form of the echo power probability density function. It is also shown how these two techniques are related to each other mathematically.
