Colour Reactions for Chemical Warfare Agents in the Skin and on Protective Clothing

Colorimetric methods were investigated for detection of sulfur mustard, VX en lewisite on protective clothing and skin of pig ears. Sulfur mustard and VX could be detected on out-of-area clothing by using 4(4 nitrobenzyl)pyridine. Sulfur mustard could also be detected on skin of pig ears, using the same reagent. Lewisite could be detected on out-of-area clothing and skin of pig ears by using thio-Michler ketone. The effect of the decontaminats HOP and RSDL was assessed by using the developed colorimetric methods.
