Nanoparticle: Monoclonal Antibody Conjugates: A Novel Drug Delivery System in Human Breast Cancer

The work proposed in this grant involves the development of nanoparticle: monoclonal antibody conjugated for use as a therapeutic approach to targeting specific breast cancer cells. As described in the accompanying document we have successfully produced these nanoparticle: antibody conjugates, and have examined them with regard to drug release. We have also examined them with regard to their ability to bind to HER-2 positive breast cancer cells. Our current assays of this binding suggest that binding is non-specific. It is felt that this non-specificity may represent a failure of the assay utilized to examine binding, and another assay is currently being developed. In addition, we are currently examining other nanoparticle substrates that would have preferential drug release qualities. Early studies suggest that the development of these is a feasible goal.
