摘要

This assessment evaluated the potential for human health effects to offsite residents breathing air emissions following use of the M118 Illuminating Booby Trap Simulator during training exercises. The military uses pyrotechnics for signaling, obscuring, and illumination during training exercises to simulate battle conditions. Study results showed no potential for health risks to the hypothetical resident from inhalation of air emissions from the M118. To conduct this study, air emissions from the M118 were collected in a test chamber at Dugway Proving Grounds, UT. This information was then used in an air dispersion model to determine ambient air concentrations at a location 100 meters downwind from the site where the item was activated. Modeled air concentrations were combined with exposure information to estimate the amount of substances the hypothetical resident breathes. This intake was combined with the substance's health information, to determine if there is a potential for health risks from inhalation of these substances. The health risk included both long-term and short term exposures to the modeled substance concentrations. Study results showed no potential for health risks from inhalation of air emissions from the M118.
