Keeping the Forward Surgical Company in Top Condition: Evaluation of Biomedical Equipment Test and Repair AMALS

The purpose of evaluating test and repair (T&R) Authorized Medical Allowance List (AMAL) 691-Equipment and AMAL 692-Consumables is to ensure that T&R is capable of maintaining the biomedical equipment contained in other surgical company AMALs. Each line item was researched to determine what it is used for, whether it is current, and whether it is redundant. Subject matter experts were recruited from T&R commands to serve as consultants. They participated in meetings and were available to provide assistance by phone or e- mail. Analysis of the T&R AMALs resulted in recommendations for extensive changes to the contents of AMALs 691 and 692. These changes represent an effort to update the AMALs so that T&R is in a state of operational readiness, capable of performing testing, calibration, and repair of surgical company biomedical equipment. recommendations for improving the process of updating the T&R AMALs include, (1) adding the National Stock Number of the end-item (the biomedical equipment in other AMALs) to the nomenclature of the T&R AMALs; (2) developing Authorized Parts Lists (APLs) for new biomedical equipment; and (3) developing a database that links T&R items, APLs, and equipment electronically to make information accessible.
