This ESTCP demonstration evaluated the technical effectiveness and cost of a fluidized bed bioreactor (FBR) for treating N-ni trosodunethylam ine (NDMA) in groundwater. The demonstration site was the NASA White Sands Test Facility (WSTF) in Las Cruces, NM. The FBR system consisted of a single bioreactor (I fl diameter x 11.75 ft tall) that operated at now ntte. ranging from - I to 5 gpm, and was feel oxygen, propane, and inorganic nutrients to slim ulate propanotrophic bacteria to biodegmde NOMA. The FBR was clocWllentecl to be an effective mean to treat NDlviA in groundwater from - I(lg/L) to below 4.2 ng/L, the current regulatory discharge lim it at WSTF at a 20 minute hydraulic residence time. The FBR also treated N-nitrodimethylamine consistently to < 10 ngfL. The FBR was reliable with greater than 94% up time, and was resilient to upset including power outages, lack of innuent groundwater now, and absence of propane and nutrients for several days. The cost of a full-scale FBR (125 gpm system) was determined to be significantly less than a comparable ultraviolent system over a 30 year remedial timeframe.
