This DEPSCoR project demonstrated the practical feasibility of ultrafast holographic image interferogram using a single shot exposure with subpicosecond laser pulses. This goal was achieved by applying novel technique of femtosecond pulsed illumination and by optimizing the recording properties of special organic frequency-selective materials. Recording of single shot femtosecond holograms was accomplished by switching the spectral hole burning material into a photochemically unstable form, which increased the hole burning efficiency by more than one order of magnitude. Double exposure image interferograms were demonstrated with 150-fs duration pulses. Our results show that it is possible to record femtosecond time-resolved holograms and interferograms of ultrafast transient events without loss of spatial/temporal resolution, in a way which overcomes infinitesimal coherence length of the ultrashort pulses.
