MRI-Based Screen for Breast Cancer Patients Carrying a Breast Susceptibility Gene.

We have successfully performed an MR screening study on 181 patients at high risk for breast cancer that did not have an actionable mammogram or clinical finding prior to study entry. Abnormal MRI findings prompted a total of 31 biopsies, 6 of which yielded malignant findings. The cancer yield of the MRI screen was 3.3% of the women, and 1.8% of the exams (2.2% for the Initial screens and 1.1% of the follow up screens). The false negative rate of MRI with a variable follow up was 1/7 (14%). Although the data needs to be confirmed with larger studies, this data suggests that MRI may be a valuable tool for screening women at high risk for breast cancer.
