Characterization of a 4-inch Portable Shock Tube.

A shock tube can be used to repeatedly recreate explosive blast pressures. This report characterizes the blasts from a 4-inch diameter portable shock tube to be used in acoustic research at the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory. The data from initial testing show that the shock tube has a dynamic range spanning 130 to 170 dB sound pressure level (SPL), and A-durations that usually fall between 0.5 and 2 milliseconds. These ranges qualify the shock tube as an appropriate apparatus for evaluating hearing protection devices using American National Standards Institute S12.42-2010.
