Political Views of Students at the Universities of the Armed Forces in Comparison to Those of Students at Public Institutions (Die politischen Orientierungen der Studenten an den Universitaeten der Bundeswehr im Vergleich zu den Studenten an oeffentlichen Hochschulen)

The generally conveyed image of the soldier and the profession of the officer generally tend towards the conservative, and the results of the current study convincingly confirm this stereotype. This fact is true in particular through the given opportunity of comparing these views with those of students at national, i.e. public universities. On the seven-level continuum (extremely left-wing being 1, extremely conservative being 7) of political opinion, 43 percent of the Armed Forces' students came out as 5, and 31 percent as 4, meaning that three-quarters of the student body scaled to the center or right of the center. Seventy-Otwo percent of the public university students, on the other hand, were either center or left of center. Although comparatively few in number, many more military students rated at a 7 than did public university students.
