This report provides additional detail on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) progress in implementing the debt-referral requirements of DCIA to collect delinquent Medicare debts and includes several recommendations. Collection of delinquent Medicare debts is particularly critical because they represented a significant portion about 9 percent of the approximately $58 billion of reported delinquent nontax debts governmentwide as of September 30, 2000, and continue to represent a large amount.
