Green Thread Pipe Evaluation at Lualualei, HI and Jim Creek, WA

This report summarizes the study of Green Thread fiberglass piping that was installed at the Lualualei, HI and Jim Creek, WA VLF sites. This Green Thread pipe was introduced to these VLF sites in 1996 and 1997, respectively, as a replacement for the original materials used to conduct cooling water to and from the power amplifier tubes. The Naval Research Laboratory was tasked with monitoring the changes in water quality with the aging of the Green Thread pipe. Yearly monitoring of standard chemical and physical variables significant for the sites, such as dissolved copper, pH, resistivity, dissolved organics, dissolved oxygen, sacrificial target use, Barnstead cartridge usage, and PA tube failure rates was conducted in addition to establishing a laboratory test bed. The Green Thread pipe has not introduced any apparent system degrading components into the VLF cooling water system. From the data collected, it appears that the Green Thread pipe is appropriate for the intended purpose.
