The Phase I work objective was to demonstrate the feasibility of using a microwave oxidation catalyst to destroy hydrocarbons and chemical warfare agents in water contaminated by washing of combat vehicles. A sufficient amount of experimental work has been completed evaluating the performance of the microwave catalytic oxidation process and determining the effect of different operating parameters in terms of contaminant destruction efficiency. Microwave power and solution flow rate are the most important parameters for the design of microwave reactors. A process flow diagram (PFD) for the microwave reactor system was developed based on the experimental results. Data show that more than 99% of the gasoline, diethyl sulfide (simulant of HD gas), detergent, engine oil, and JP-8 fuel in water are destroyed by microwave-granular activated carbon (GAC) oxidation catalyst. Furthermore, microwaves easily regenerated GAC used during the experimentation. Experimental data and PFD developed during the Phase I work clearly demonstrate the technical feasibility of the microwave-GAC catalytic oxidation process for the destruction of hydrocarbons and other chemical agents in water The Phase I work will lead to the development of portable microwave recycling-washing systems for U.S. Army to treat wastewater generated at the front lines and military bases in U.S.
