Microbial cultures, capable of anaerobic hydrocarbon degradation were obtained from the anaerobic marine sediments in San Diego Bay (Paleta Creek sediments) Using n-alkanes (from C6 to C12), alkyl-benzenes (toluene, ethylbenzene, 0-, m-, and p-xylene isomers), and alkyl-cycloalkanes (ethyl cyclopentane), in conjunction with C13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (some of the hydrocarbon compounds were labeled with either 2H and C13-nuclei), anaerobic biodegradation reaction pathways and metabolite structures were identified and characterized.
