Singapore and the United States: Cooperation on Transnational Security Threats

Singapore is Washington's closest security partner in Southeast Asia. In assessing the cooperation between the two countries on transnational security threats, this paper presents optimistic findings. The paper is divided into three sections. First, it discusses the security concerns and priorities in Singapore since September 2001, and evaluates how well they align with U.S. priorities, taking into account key aspects of bilateral cooperation to date. The second section addresses the question of what can be done to enhance security and defense cooperation between the two countries, including regional counterterrorism and maritime security issues. The final section concludes by placing the analysis in a broader Southeast Asian context.
