Role of IMAT Solutions for Training Development at the Royal Netherlands Air Force. IMAT Follow-up Research Part 1

Integrating Manuals and Training (IMAT) tools, developed in the European Esprit Project 29175, provide an advanced set of prototype tools that have been developed for the effective and efficient reuse of (electronic) technical manuals for the development of training material. To investigate the applicability of IMAT tools in the RNLAF the following research activities were conducted: analysis of the 'MAT concept and tools, analysis of educational, organisational and technology (ETO) factors of influence in the RNLAF, modeling, definition of various user scenarios, interviews, expert reviews and a comparison of methods used for adding metadata in 'MAT compared to the ADL-SCORM standard used by the RNLAF. Based upon the results from these research activities it was concluded that the 'MAT tools can be a valuable contribution to training (development) in the RNLAF. The tools, however, are still prototypes and need to be developed further to become fully operational. The applicability of the IMAT concept depends on the choices the RNLAF will make regarding the implementation of electronic technical manuals, the development of (electronic) training material, the type and size of the training domain(s), etc. The research resulted in a set of requirements for successful IMAT implementation.
