Given the costs of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in mining, and MSHA's proactive attention given to all mines, an average exposure determination may be more appropriate for compliance decisions than the current shift-by-shift basis. If dose averages are used, database errors must be minimized. Errors in dosimetry data can be detected by a variety of means, including: 1. from an understanding of the mathematics relating action level doses to permissible exposure level doses, and 2. corroboration with previous or concurrent survey information. A comparison of the two schemes is presented, and several simple methods for validating dosimetry data are explained.
