摘要

From February through August 2004, the William and Mary Center for Archaeological Research conducted an archaeological survey of 406 acres of the Langley Air Force Base (LAFB) installation in partial compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The focus of the survey was moderate to high probability areas along the shorelines of Back River and Tabb Creek. Seven archaeological sites and 23 archaeological locations were identified during the survey. The seven Native American site components indicate human presence in the study area from 500 B.C. until colonial contact. The earliest of the 23 historic components dates to the early seventeenth century, and the most common are those dating to the late eighteenth to early nineteenth century. Four of the sites (44HT10, 44HT12, 44HT96, 44HT98) are recommended potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D; in each case, Criteria A-C are considered not applicable. The three remaining sites identified (44HT13, 44HT95, 44HT97) are recommended not eligible for inclusion under Criterion D; Criteria AC are considered not applicable. By definition, the 23 archaeological locations identified during this survey are not eligible for inclusion under any criteria.
