This program was part of the DARPA program on Synthetic Multi- Functional Materials focused on structural plus ballistic and blast protection. During the first period of this program we have been focusing on developing both intrinsic and embedded functionality into a class of metal-intermetallic laminate (MIL) composites based on the Ti-Al system. These layered composites were initially developed as part of an Army MURI program at the University of CA, San Diego as a lightweight armor material. These MIL composites offer a unique combination of excellent specific mechanical properties such as high strength, high hardness, and high fracture toughness, with the ability to be formed into complex shaped penetration resistance structural materials. The addition of sensing, control, enhanced vibration damping, self healing and possibly power generation could make these materials a valuable part of future defense systems.
